One of the objectives of the EuskoTren XXI Strategic Plan is to promote the exchange of goods by rail, and guarantee intermodal transport:

Logistic area of Irún: in this first stage a loading and unloading track will be built to change the current haulage point from Lasarte to Irún, thus reducing the road travelling expenses. It will allow contracting returns with slightly higher margins

Puerto de Bermeo – Amorebieta (Puerto Seco): from the social point of view, this could be the most interesting project, because lorries would be removed from the road in the emblematic area of Urdaibai. The estimated trade amount would be 300.000 Tons/year.

EuskoTren would have the advantage of being the only railway operator. Moreover, performances regarding passengers, that are to be implemented, are already fulfilled.

The most crucial point of this project is the laying of double track (Autzagane, Inama, Instituto and San Kristobal). Any performance in Puerto Seco (Amorebieta), is up to the laying between Amorebieta and Durango.

Port of Pasaia / Irún – Azpeitia Transport: Significant traffic of scrap and iron and steel products (around 600.000 Tons/year). It is a complete railway transport, which could be exclusive of EuskoTren.

We will need big investments in substructures and rolling stock, according to the following performances and apart from the general network performances:

a) Reopening of the Urola Railway between Azpeitia and Zumaia (even access to factory).

b) Access and tracks in the Port of Pasaia.

Nowadays, the goods railway transport by EuskoTren consists on trains carrying steel reels between the factories of ACERALIA, from Avilés (Asturias) to Lesaka (Navarra) through the EuskoTren terminal in Lasarte Oria.

This transport service is operated under the Collaboration Agreement signed between FEVE and EuskoTren. The objective of this agreement is to boost jointly goods transport along the Cantabrian coast, through the railway lines of the two companies.

One of the objectives of the EuskoTren XXI Strategic Plan is to promote the exchange of goods by rail, and guarantee intermodal transport.

Traffic safety makes us follow other countries of the European Union; railway must be the best, most economical and safest means of transport both for goods and society in general.

Moreover, goods railway transport must be supported by significant intermodal port transport.

In the future, there will be several railway substructures in the Basque Autonomous Community , and EuskoTren wants to operate them. Among those substructures, we should remark the Goods transport, because we will thus witness the recovering of the ancient historical role that was exclusively held by railway.

The strategic location of the network and the connection to other railway operators make EuskoTren become essential to cover all the Cantabrian coast, and also allow us to get to the trade ports of Bermeo, Pasaia and Bilbao.

The features of EuskoTren make its implementation be of great importance in the integration and development of the territories and centres of population through which the service passes. The development is more respectful and harmonious with the environment. The emphasis is on the quality and safety of both goods and passenger transport.
